Pensiangan, Sabah | 冰霜岸, 沙巴 (10th - 13th May 2017)

On the 10th of May 2017, I joined my colleagues from Impian Malaysia's infrastructure team, together with 30 volunteers (including doctors and medical staffs from FPMPAM, and other general volunteers) to deliver free medical services to the villagers of Kg. Babalitan, Kg. Tinanduk & Kg. Siningkaluan in Pekan Pensiangan, Sabah. (Pensiangan is located at the southern interior division of Sabah, which is inhabited by a large percentage of Murut communities.)

The access to the villages was never easy, as we have to travel for a good 5++ hours from Kota Kinabalu to the Salung jetty by car, (not to mention that there were gravel and bumpy off roads along the way, literally a journey full of ups and downs, haha) and take a 90-minute boat ride to reach the first destination: Kampung Babalitan.

The amazing volunteer doctors and medical staffs were all set for the 1 and a half hours boat ride towards Kampung Babalitan!

We have other passengers heading to the same village with us too.

Here goes our boatman maneuvering the boat effortlessly. (I can't help but keep taking pictures & videos of him until he got pissed off after a while hahaha)

The boys from Kampung Babalitan. I don't know why but the boy in the middle has left a lasting impression on me that until now the image of his face still comes into my mind occasionally even though I've left the village for such a long time.

This is Dr. Tan from Kedah, who is a doctor and a farming enthusiast at the same time. He brought packets of vegetable seeds as gifts for the villagers and patiently explained to them on how to grow and take care of the seedlings. 看似微小的举动,却充分体现了他医者仁心的精神。

An uncle from Kampung Babalitan going through a simple eye test.

Heldy, a young Sabahan volunteer sterilizing the dental instruments by placing them into a pot of hot boiling water.

The dental instruments.

The 3 little kids from Kampung Siningkaluan, patiently waiting for the boats to pass by the river. They reminded me that happiness can always be found from the simplest things. =)

"Where does this weird-looking intruder come from?" whispered the kids.
